Please be mindful of the fact that all the French sounds are produced with greater facial, throat and other phonatory muscle tension than any English sound.

The French [ u ] sound
does not exist in the English repertoire. The closest to it would be the English vowels in words like moon and spoon in some people's pronunciation. However due to its very French nature, the English speaker will have to make an effort to acquire the correct pronunciation of this uniquely French sound. See detailed description below.

The sound's written representations are:
u û eu
Slightly longer when followed by [r] [l] [s] [g]
·u -
·û -
·eu -

How to pronounce the [ u ] sound?

If you can whistle or even just close enough, you will realize how you have formed a tiny little circle with your lips and how you have protruded them. Now, maintain these features as best as you can and twist your protruding lips slightly upward as if you wanted to kiss the tip of your nose and at the same time, yes simultaneously, inside your mouth you should try to pronounce the English /ee/ sound as in see. The result should be a beautiful and natural French [u] sound, but only if you observed my instructions. Congratulations! You are now one hurdle closer to native-like french pronunciation of [ u ].
